About Place in Ladakh

Leh is the largest town and capital of Ladakh. It is surrounded by barren mountains. Ladakh is accessible only during summers from May to October when the highways connecting Leh to Srinagar and Manali are opened. However the internal roads generally remain open throughout the year as ladakh receives very little snowfall even in the winters. Being a high altitude cold desert, summer in ladakh are warm during the day and winters are very cold and harsh.

The north east area of Ladakh valley is the tri-armed Nubra Valley. It extends from the junction of the Shyok river, tributary of the Indus, and the Siachen or Nubra river to the Karakoram range in the north. Most of the vegetation and habitation is near the rivers surrounded by barren mountains. The road from Leh to Nubra valley goes over the high Khardung La at 17,582 ft. Chamba Gompa, Diskit Gompa, Maitreya are some places worth visiting in this area. The ancient Nubra kingdom had its capital at Hunder. The area between Hunder and Diskit has large areas of sand dunes and two-humped Bactrian camel graze here on seabuckthorns. The village of Baigdandu here is unique place and is known for the goats from whose wool we make the famous Pasmina shawls.

To the east of Ladakh located at a height of about 14,270 ft, is the beautiful Pangong Lake forming a land locked river basin. Having no outlet this is a salt water lake. Inspite of its salt waters the lake completely freezes in winter. It is 5 km wide at its broadest and 134 km long and lies partially in India and partially in China. As the Indo-Sino Line of Actual Control passes through it, you will require Inner Line Permit is required to visit the lake and boating is not allowed here.

This trip has a combination of mettalled and unmetalled roads and the rides can be long and rough. Overall it is not easy and is ideal for adventure biker. The areas coverred are high altitude regions and very high altitude passes, so care should be taken against altitude sickness. Be sure to carry waterproof clothings and warm inner wears as temperatures can be freezing in case of any unlikely rain.
